What is Tattoo-Associated Uveitis?
Tattoo-associated uveitis is when someone gets swelling in their eyes because of a tattoo. “Uveitis” means swelling inside the eye. This can happen months or even years after getting a tattoo.
What Causes It?
When you get a tattoo, ink goes under your skin. Sometimes, the body’s defense system (called the immune system) decides the ink doesn’t belong there. The immune system tries to fight the ink like it would fight infections. This can cause swelling in the tattoo and in the eyes at the same time.
Black ink tattoos seem to cause this problem most often. Scientists and doctors are not completely sure why this happens, but they think something in the tattoo ink triggers the body’s defense system.
What Are the Signs?
People with this condition usually notice two things happening together:
– Their tattoo becomes raised, bumpy, red, or swollen
– Both of their eyes become red, painful, or blurry
The eye problems usually affect both eyes, not just one.
How Do Doctors Treat It?
Doctors usually treat this condition with special medicines called steroids that help reduce swelling. Some people need eye drops, while others need pills. In some cases, people need stronger medicines that calm down the immune system.
Sometimes, the only way to make the problem go away completely is to remove the tattoo. When doctors remove the tattoo, the eye swelling often stops coming back.
Is It Serious?
Yes, this condition can be serious. It can cause vision problems if not treated. Some people develop cataracts (cloudy spots in the eye) or glaucoma (high pressure in the eye). That’s why it’s important to see a doctor right away if you have a tattoo that becomes swollen and your eyes start hurting or your vision gets blurry.
How Common Is It?
This condition is rare, but doctors are seeing it more often as more people get tattoos. It usually happens to young adults, and most people who get it are in their 20s or 30s.
