What is panuveitis?
Panuveitis is a sickness inside the eye that can make it hard to see clearly. It means that many parts of the inside of the eye are swollen and irritated all at the same time. When the eye is swollen, it can get red, hurt, or feel sore. Bright light can bother the eyes, and things might look blurry. Sometimes kids with panuveitis also see tiny spots or shadows that seem to float around in their vision, called “floaters.” If this swelling is not treated, it can hurt the eye and make it harder to see over time.
What causes panuveitis?
Panuveitis can happen for a few different reasons. Sometimes it starts after an infection, like a virus or germs that get into the body and make the immune system angry. Other times, the body’s immune system gets confused and starts to attack the eye by mistake, as if the eye were a germ. In some kids, panuveitis can be part of another sickness in the body, such as joint problems or skin rashes. Once in a while, doctors cannot find the exact cause, but they can still treat the swelling to help protect vision. No matter the cause, it is important to see an eye doctor if a child has red eyes, eye pain, or trouble seeing so they can get help quickly.
How is panuveitis treated?
Panuveitis is treated with medicine that helps calm the swelling inside the eye. Doctors often start with eye drops that contain steroids to reduce redness, pain, and swelling. Sometimes children also need medicine by mouth or shots to help the whole body, not just the eye. If an infection is causing the problem, the doctor may give special medicine to fight germs, like antibiotics. It is very important to use the medicines exactly as the doctor says and go to all follow-up visits so the doctor can make sure the eye is getting better.
What is the prognosis of panuveitis?
The word “prognosis” means what doctors think will happen in the future. Many children with panuveitis can do well and keep good vision if the problem is found early and treated right away. When families follow the treatment plan and see the eye doctor regularly, it helps protect the eyes from long-term damage. If panuveitis is not treated, it can cause serious problems like vision loss, so it should never be ignored. With good care, many kids can keep doing the things they enjoy, like reading, playing sports, and going to school, without their eyes holding them back.
